Safe Drinking Water

Making water safe to drink starts by protecting the place it comes from. We work with the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) to examine water at its source and look for possible pollutants. ADEQ’s Source Water Assessment (SWA) has given the Town a low-risk and low-vulnerability designation for the degree to which the drinking water sources are protected.

In compliance with the Federal Safe Drinking Water Act, the Town monitors regulated contaminants.

These include:

  • Microbial Contaminants, such as viruses and bacteria
  • Inorganic Contaminants, such as salts and metals
  • Pesticides and herbicides
  • Organic Chemical Contaminants, by-products of industrial processes and petroleum production
  • Radioactive Contaminants, by-products of industrial processes and petroleum production

As a result, the Town monitors and samples for over 100 substances/physical characteristics on a regular basis.

CONSUMER CONFIDENCE REPORT (CCR)

The Town is required to draft and publish a Consumer Confidence Report (CCR) for its customers each year which shows the most up to date information on both Water Systems. The report includes most recent testing and sampling data, notice of violations for that year, information on various contaminants and why we test them, as well as general information which show our customers the overall health of our water system. BACKFLOW DEVICE TESTING

The final, major category for maintaining compliance in accordance with the Safe Drinking Water Act is requiring backflow prevention devices and testing those devices annually. We require backflow prevention devices on all commercial accounts and for any residence that has an uncapped well. The Town has over 600 backflow prevention devices protecting its system from unintended reversal of water flow through a cross-connection, which can result in a potentially serious public health hazard.

Monitoring Assistance Program (MAPS)

MAPS is a program that assists smaller water systems by providing cost-effective annual testing of various regulated contaminants, to include, Nitrates, Fluoride, Arsenic, herbicides, pesticides, petroleum derivatives, and radionuclides. Although Arsenic is typically tested through MAPS, on an annual basis, the Mongini and Verde River Estates Well Sites are required to sample and report Arsenic results quarterly.

PFAS

Per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are manufactured chemicals that have adverse health effects at certain levels. They are not yet regulated by the EPA; however, systems have been required to do preliminary testing of over 180 different PFAS in anticipation of impending regulations.  The Town has tested for PFAS twice and shown no detect for most substances, with one detected but testing below Maximum Contaminant Levels (MCL).

Total Coliform Bacteria

The Town samples for coliform bacteria at six (6) locations across the Mongini Townsite system each month and samples one location across the Verde River Estates system each month. The total coliform bacteria test measures the concentration of total coliform associated with the possible presence of disease-causing organisms.

Chlorination / Residual Chlorine

The Town treats its water with Chlorine for disinfection to prevent the development of bacterial contamination. Because Chlorine in higher doses is also a contaminant, the Town is required to test Residual Chlorine, ensuring post-treatment chlorine levels are neither too high nor too low. These samples are taken monthly but reported quarterly in the Maximum Residual Disinfection Level (MRDL) report.

TTHMS and HAA5

TTHM (Total Trihalomethanes) and HAA5 (Haloacetic Acids) are disinfection byproducts formed when chlorine or other disinfectants react with organic matter in water. They are regulated due to potential health risks and these are tested for and reported annually to ensure safe drinking water.

Lead-Copper Testing

Copper and lead testing are conducted every three years.  Our most recent test was completed in August 2023 and showed levels well below the EPA’s Maximum Contaminant Levels (MCL) for copper and no detect for lead. Our next test is scheduled to take place in August 2026.

LCRR and Lead-Service-Line Identification

The Lead and Copper Rule Revisions (LCRR) was mandated by the EPA to ensure safe drinking water. Presently, the Town has successfully verified 1,604 service lines as being non-lead and non-copper, out of 1,990 service lines total. We have 386 service lines remaining of unknown material which still need to be verified. To date, we have not found lead service lines in our system. By the end of 2026, the Town is required to identify the remaining service lines.

About Arsenic

Arsenic is a mineral known to cause cancer in humans at high concentration and is linked to other health effects, such as skin damage and circulatory problems. While your drinking water meets EPA's standard for arsenic, it does contain low levels of arsenic. EPA's standard balances the current understanding of arsenic's possible health effects against the costs of removing arsenic from drinking water.
