Building Safety Month - Week 1

Safe Homes, Strong Communities

May 1-10

Safe communities begin with safe homes. During Week 1 of Building Safety Month, we’re focusing on common household hazards and the simple actions homeowners and residents can take to improve safety every day.

Many household dangers can be prevented through routine maintenance and regular inspections. Common concerns include fire and electrical hazards, slip and fall risks, plumbing leaks and blocked emergency exits. Staying aware of these issues can help reduce accidents and costly damage.

Simple maintenance tasks such as testing smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, checking for plumbing leaks, cleaning dryer vents and maintaining electrical systems can make a significant difference in keeping a home safe.

It is also important to understand the safety features built into your home, including smoke alarms, fire extinguishers, GFCI outlets and accessible emergency exits.

When planning home improvements or renovations, proper permits and code-compliant construction help ensure homes remain safe, durable and resilient for years to come.
